Catcher Swap Could Clear Way For DeRosa

December 10th, 2008 by Matt

The Phillies made a small trade today, swapping backup catchers with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Phils sent Jason Jaramillo to the Steel City for Ronnie Paulino.

With Chris Coste a popular name included in trade talks regarding the three way Peavy to Cubs situation, this could be the first domino to fall to make that a reality, Todd Zolecki opines.

Assuming Coste is gone, Paulino would most likely spar with Phils prospect Lou Marson to backup Carlos Ruiz in 2009. Jaramillo didn’t seem to figure into the Phillies long-term plans, so this is no big loss.

In other news, FoxSports is reporting that the Phillies would trade Adam Eaton for 5 gallons of jock itch cream. Ok, it’s not that bad, but almost! The Phils would trade Eaton if the lucky trade partner was willing to pay $1 million of the $9 million owed to Eaton in 2009. Can you remember the last time a player was dangled out there for so little? Why not just release him?
