With Friends Like Ruben…
January 7th, 2009 by MattThe fallout from the JC Romero suspension continues.
Perhaps the most annoying and unsurprising response from all of this came from the Phillies braintrust yesterday in a conference call with reporters where Ruben Amaro unsuccessfully attempted to have it both ways – we love JC, but we love the drug policy too. Real nice, guys.
Bill Conlin wrote a snarky piece today about how JC needed to learn from the real cheaters on how to get away with this.
Bill Price from the New York Daily News calls the Phillies World Series win into question. To which I offer this retort. Lenny Dykstra. 1986 World Series. Let’s just throw out ever World Series win in the 90s, too, then. Can we move on from this ridiculous angle? Thanks.
Carson from We Should Be GMs is sick over it. Me too.
Will Carroll at Baseball Prospectus must be a chemist, because he tells us that the crap that Romero was taking is “a product that enhances testosterone production in ways very similar to anabolic steroids”. He doesn’t cite anything to back this up, but give him a break as he says in the comments of his post, he threw it together on his iPhone on vacation. What a pro.
John Gonzalez uses his “You Talkin’ To Me?” segment (which is growing on me) in the Inqy to discuss the Romero situation.
Lastly, Jim Salisbury has a good article that quotes MLB’s Rob Manfred in pretty good detail regarding MLB’s side of this.

Thanks for the plug. I’m going to pat my own pat and say it’s one of the finer pieces I’ve written because I looked at the case from various viewpoints.
