Halfway Through Road Trip, Phils Delivering
September 22nd, 2009 by MattIn the midst of a 10 game road trip through Atlanta, Florida and Milwaukee, the Phils are showing the Mets how you close the door on a division.
Despite a recent rash of injuries that has plagued the pitching staff, the Phillies are finding ways to win games, whether it is a pitching duel or a 10-9 barnburner.
This is the real difference between the Phillies and the Mets, who were unable to seal the deal in 2007 or 2008 when they enjoyed division leads with a handful of games to go.
Regardless of how this season ends for the Fightins, history will most likely remember the Phils as a team that perhaps was too cool about their chances, but knew how to get it done when the lights shone brightest as summer gave way to fall.
At this point, the Phils would face the Rockies in the NLDS if the playoff seedings remain as they are today. The Phils would be doubly motivated by the prospects of repeating as well as the ability to exact some payback on the Rockies,, who swept the local 9 in the 2007 NLDS.
The difference between this team and the 2007 squad weighs a few ounces and rests on each of the Phillies’ fingers. They should be relaxed in October as opposed to the tension of 2007. This Phils team has been there, done that. What felled the Phils in 2007 was a mixture of running into a ridiculously hot team as well as the Phils just being way too tight in both their pitching and hitting.
It’s doubtful the Phils will anything other than focused and perhaps even more locked in when the playoffs begin. The desire will be there. The only question now is will the pitchers make it also?
